The KALMAR NYCKEL is a re-creation of the 1620 Dutch built,
Swedish borne, pinnace that sailed from Sweden in 1638, to bring the first Scandinavian settlers up the Delaware
River to what is now the city of Wilmington, Delaware or "New Sweden".
She measures 93 feet overall, 25 feet of beam, with a draft of 12 feet, 168 tons-burthen and displaces 300 long
tons. Carries a Certification of Inspection by the United States Coast Guard to operate as a small passenger vessel
for hire under Sub-Chapter "T".
Re-creation began with the laying of the keel in May 1995. She was launched in September, 1997 and commissioned
into service in May, 1998.
When not at sea, working as a good will ambassador, a sail-training vessel KALMAR NYCKEL is docked at the Kalmar
Nyckel Shipyard, on the Christina River, Wilmington, Delaware.
