Allen C. Rawl, Inc.,has been providing ship grade domestic and tropical
wood for new build and restoration work since 1987. More that 11 species are available including Purpleheart, Greenheart,
Kabukalli, South American Locust, Tatabu and spar grade timbers of Doughlas Fir and Sitka Spruce. The lead time
for orders varies, but 4-6 months is reasonable for the tropical hardwood , slightly less time for the Domestic
wood depending on the size. Consultations regarding the best choice of wood for your specific application is offered.
Each specie of wood is chosen for its unique properties. Considerations are density, strength, durability, resistance
to rot, resistance to marine bores and weight.
Master shipbuilder Allen Rawl has spent time in the South American jungle working with the Arowak sawyers who harvest
the trees. Harvesting is closely controlled by the Government and regulations determine how many board feet of
each specie is cut each year. Therefore, availability of all specie may vary.
A strong proponent of controlled harvesting, Allen Rawl believes that using superior grade timbers actually saves
trees because, "well built, well maintained vessels will last decades with few, if any repairs to the structural
members."
